Shepherd Softball Drops Pair to #13 East Stroudsburg

STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (11-11, 1-3 PSAC East) dropped a doubleheader with #13 East Stroudsburg (21-5, 3-1 PSAC East) in a pair of pitching duels in PSAC East softball action at East Stroudsburg on Friday. The Rams dropped a 1-0 decision in game one and came up short on a 2-1 outcome in the nightcap.

East Stroudsburg scored the game's only run in the third inning in game one on a solo homer by Katie Master.

Freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 11 K, 0 BB) (8-1) took the loss. Paige Zigmund (6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 8 K, 0 BB) (11-2) got the win. Sarah Davenport (1.0  IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) (2) gained the save.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as senior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) singled, moved to second on a single by graduate student catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central), and went to third on an error. Forte later scored when Mantz got caught in a rundown attempting to steal.

The Warriors got a two-run homer from Samantha Derickson in the fifth to rally for the victory.

Freshman first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Davenport (5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 14 K, 0 BB) (10-2) earned the win. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (0-4) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Bloomsburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
