Shepherd Softball Sweeps Mansfield

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (13-13, 3-5 PSAC East) swept a doubleheader with Mansfield (11-9, 2-8 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Sara Cree Field on Friday. The Rams posted an 8-0 win in six innings in game one and added an 8-4 triumph in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the third inning in game one behind an RBI-double by senior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville), run-scoring singles from junior third baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) and freshman first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville), and a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore outfielder Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington).

The Rams plated four runs in the sixth with freshman catcher Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point), graduate student catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central), freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington), and Collis each driving in a run.               

Ruffner, Moore, and Mantz each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Ruffner (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 13 K, 0 BB) (11-1) earned the win. Danielle Goff (5.2 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 5 K, 5 BB) (5-6) took the loss.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first in the nightcap with junior outfielder Lauren Alt (Upper Tract, W.Va./Petersburg) and Collis each contributing run-scoring singles.

After Mansfield took a 4-3 lead with four runs in the top of the third, Shepherd plated five runs in the bottom of the frame with junior infielder Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) and Mantz each providing a two-run single.

Collis, Moore, and Alt each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Kayla Vonstein had two hits for the Mountaineers.

Senior pitcher Kourtney McNatt (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink/WV Tech) (4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 K, 1 BB) (1-1) earned the win. Annabella Putnam (6.0 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (5-5) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Lock Haven for an 11 a.m. doubleheader
