LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Shepherd University (21-23, 11-15 PSAC East) swept a doubleheader with Lock Haven (16-24, 12-16 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Lock Haven on Saturday. Shepherd posted a 3-1 win in game one as freshman pitcher
Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) tied her single-game strikeout mark with 16 strikeouts (had 16 against Northern State earlier this season). The Rams added a 5-2 victory in the nightcap to grab the sweep.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning in game one as junior third baseman
Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) singled and was replaced by sophomore pinch-runner
Sydney Martin-Gonciarz (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson/Morgan State). Martin-Gonciarz later scored on a single by freshman first baseman
Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville).
Lock Haven tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Summer Peters drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
The Rams plated a pair of runs in the fifth as Ruffner singled with one out and senior outfielder
Olivia Reese (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) followed with a home run.
Reese went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.
Riley McClelland had a pair of hits for the Bald Eagles.
Ruffner (7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 16 K, 2 BB) (14-5) tossed a complete game two-hitter to get the win. Keiva Middleton (5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (4-5) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the second in the nightcap with a two-run single by junior outfielder
Lauren Alt (Upper Tract, W.Va./Petersburg) keying the rally.
Alt reached on an error and scored on a single by Moore in the fifth to up the lead to 4-0.
Lock Haven got a solo homer from McClellan in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-1.
Senior second baseman
Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) smacked an RBI-single in the seventh to give the Rams a 5-1 lead.
The Bald Eagles got an RBI-single from Delaney Good in the bottom of the seventh.
Donnelley and Moore each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Senior pitcher
Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (2-7) gained the win. Faith Persing (7.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (11-8) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Mansfield for a noon doubleheader.
