SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (1-1) split with Slippery Rock (2-2) in softball action at Sara Cree Field on Monday. The Rams grabbed a 6-1 win in game one and dropped an 8-7 decision in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second in game one when sophomore first baseman
Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) led off with a single and later scored on a double off the bat of sophomore designated player
Trynda Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central).
Slippery Rock tied the game in the sixth when Arielle Brown singled and later scored on an error.
Shepherd plated five runs on four hits in the sixth to secure the win. Freshman outfielder
Payton Weaver (Fairplay, Md./Williamsport) smacked a two-run single to key the rally.
Senior shortstop
Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) went 2-for-2 to lead an eight-hit attack for the Rams.
Emma Kennedy went 2-for-3 for Slippery Rock.
Sophomore pitcher
Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 10 K, 0 BB) picked up the win. Kayla Williams (0.0 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap behind an RBI-single by junior catcher
Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington).
The Rock got a two-run homer from Grace Smith in the second to take a 2-1 advantage.
Slippery Rock added four runs in the third as Alexsa Hurd, Julie Montie, and Aubrey Mansfield each had RBI-doubles.
Shepherd plated five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-6 lead behind an RBI-single by sophomore catcher
Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and a three-run triple off the bat of freshman outfielder
Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro). Hartman later scored on an error.
The Rock got an RBI-double from Montie and an RBI-single by Mansfield in the fourth and held on for the one-run win .
Senior third baseman
Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) and Collis each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Montie and Mansfield each had two hits, two runs scored, and drove in a pair of runs for Slippery Rock.
Freshman pitcher
Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg) (4.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss. Hurd (5.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (2-0) gained the win. Alexa Uphold (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) picked up the save.
The Rams return to action on March 10 when they travel to Clermont, Fla. to face Ohio Dominican at 9 a.m. and Findlay at 11:30 a.m. at The Spring Games.
