Shepherd Softball Sweeps Bloomsburg; Ruffner Fires No-Hitter

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (7-9, 3-1 PSAC East) swept a pair of games with Bloomsburg (10-6, 0-2 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Bloomsburg on Friday. The Rams recorded an 8-3 victory in game one and added a 6-0 win in the nightcap behind a no-hit effort by sophomore pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington).
 
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap as Ruffner singled and went to third on a single by senior third baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene). Ruffner scored on a single by junior catcher Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington) and Moore later scored on an infield error.
 
The Rams added three runs in the fourth on an RBI-single by Ruffner and a two-run double by Moore.
 
Shepherd completed the scoring with a run in the fifth as senior shortstop Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) singled and later scored on a single off the bat of sophomore designated player Trynda Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central).
 
Freshman outfielder Meaghan Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington), Moore, and Madelayne Ruffner each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
 
Ruffner (7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 13 K, 2 BB) (6-0) carried a perfect game into the seventh before giving up a pair of walks. Sarah Yamrick (4.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (3-1) took the loss.
 
Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in first inning in game one on an RBI-single by Mia Nemeth.
 
Shepherd tied the game in the second as freshman outfielder Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) doubled and later scored on a single by Clatterbuck.
 
The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the third as Noland hit an RBI-double and later scored on a single by Hartman.
 
Noland added an RBI-single in the fifth to up the lead to 4-1.
 
After Bloomsburg scored a run in the fifth, Shepherd added four runs in the sixth with a two-run double by sophomore catcher Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) keying the rally.            
 
The Huskies added a run in the sixth on an RBI-double from Emma Little.
 
Hartman and Clatterbuck each went 3-for-4 to lead a 13-hit attack for the Rams.
 
Little went 3-for-4 to lead the Huskies.
 
Freshman pitcher Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg) (6.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 4 BB) (1-4) earned the win. Callie Sowers (3.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (6-2) took the loss.
 
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they tr.avel to East Stroudsburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
