Shepherd Softball Splits with #12 East Stroudsburg; Ruffner Sets Strikeout Mark

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (8-10, 4-2 PSAC East) split with #12 East Stroudsburg (21-5, 5-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at East Stroudsburg on Saturday. East Stroudsburg recorded a 1-0 victory in 10 innings in game one and Shepherd posted a 2-0 win in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) set a Shepherd single-game mark with 18 strikeouts in the nightcap.
 
Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the fifth in the nightcap to gain the win. Sophomore catcher Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) singled, and sophomore pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) reached on an error. The pair later scored on a single by senior third baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene).
 
Moore went 3-for-4 and Chambers went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.
 
Ruffner (7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 18 K, 0 BB) (7-0) tossed a one-hitter to gain the win. Her 18-strikeout effort surpassed the record of 16 strikeouts that she set twice last season. Troyer Faith (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 K, 0 BB) (3-3) took the loss.
 
Tatum Kingsley singled home pinch-runner Georgia Tym in the bottom of the 10th to give the Warriors  the win in game one.
 
Sarah Davenport (10.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 14 K, 2 BB) (15-0) gained the win. Freshman pitcher Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg) (9.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (1-5) took the loss.
 
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Lock Haven for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
