LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Shepherd University (19-16-1, 15-8-1 PSAC East) swept Lock Haven (14-22, 8-18 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Lock Haven on Friday. Shepherd recorded a 3-1 win in game one and added an 8-7 triumph in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher
Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) fanned 14 in the opener and four in the nightcap to set the Shepherd all-time career strikeout mark of 461 strikeouts. She had shared the mark with former Shepherd All-American Nichole Pitcock (443, 2008-11).
Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead in the fourth in game one when Bella Schmitt walked and later scored on double by Maci Brodzina.
Shepherd took the 2-1 lead in the fifth. Senior shortstop
Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) singled and scored on a double off the bat of freshman outfielder
Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro). Hartman later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder
Sydney Martin-Gonciarz (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson/Morgan State).
The Rams added an insurance run in the sixth as junior catcher
Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington) singled and later scored on a single by Clatterbuck.
Clatterbuck went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.
Ruffner (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 14 K, 1 BB) (14-1) earned the win. Keri Wesneski (7.0 IP, 3 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (4-5) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run blast by senior third baseman
Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene).
The Rams added a run in the third when sophomore catcher
Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) singled and later scored on a ground out by Hartman.
Shepherd took a 5-0 lead in the fourth on a two-run single by Moore.
Lock Haven scored seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-5 advantage. Madison Hardy had a three-run double and Balestrini hit a three-run homer to key the rally.
The Rams cut the lead to 7-6 in the fifth behind a sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman
Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville).
Shepherd tied the game in the sixth as Clatterbuck led off with a single and later scored on a single by Hartman.
Sophomore second baseman
Cate Russian (Manassas, Va./Colgan) belted a solo homer in the seventh to lift the Rams to the win.
Moore went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead the Rams. Chambers and Clatterbuck each added a pair of hits.
Balestrini went 2-for-4 to lead the Bald Eagles.
Ruffner (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 K, 1 BB) (15-1) earned the win. Wesneski 3.0 IP 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (4-6) suffered the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Mansfield for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
