Shepherd Baseball Splits with Shippensburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (22-22, 9-13 PSAC East) split with Shippensburg (23-19, 10-12 PSAC East) in PSAC East doubleheader baseball action on Senior Day at Fairfax Field on Saturday. Shepherd dropped a 4-2 decision in game one and rebounded with a 15-7 triumph in the nightcap.
 
Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one on a solo homer by Mason Morris.

The Rams tied the game 1-1 in the second when junior shortstop Ethan Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) singled and stole second. He scored on a double off the bat of freshman catcher Colin Ahart (Pennsauken, NJ//St. Joseph Academy) 

Shippensburg took a 2-1 lead in the third when Gio Calamia singled and scored on a Morris single.

Shepherd tied the game 2-2 in the fifth when Burgreen doubled and later scored when senior outfielder Trey Sine (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) grounded out. 

The Raiders plated two in the sixth highlighted by doubles from Ty Sherman and Bryce Herb. 

Burgreen led the Rams at the plate going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. 

Jaxon Dalena (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 2 BB) (7-3) earned the win. Junior pitcher Allen Miller (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) (5.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 K,  2 BB) (4-3) took the loss.

Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap when Calamia walked and later scored on a single by Carter Arbuthnot. 

Shippensburg took a 2-0 lead in the second when Herb singled and scored on a single off the bat of Carter Hinds. 

Shepherd plated eight runs to take an 8-2 lead in the second highlighted by two-run doubles from redshirt sophomore second baseman Nathaniel Brookshire (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) and redshirt sophomore outfielder Ethan Jones (Oakton, Va./Oakton).

Shippensburg added a run in the third when AJ Wenrich doubled and scored on a single from Sherman. 

Shepherd took advantage of three players being hit-by-pitch and three walks to take an 11-3 lead in the third.

The Rams took advantage of two batters being hit-by-pitch and an error in the fourth to score take a 14-3 lead. 

Shippensburg added two to cut the lead to 14-5 in the sixth when Mike Heckman singled and scored when Morris reached on a fielder's choice. Morris later scored on a single by Wenrich. 

Redshirt senior third baseman Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC) hit a solo blast in the sixth to give the Rams a 15-5 lead.

Shippensburg completed the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh.

Pullen led the Rams at the plate going 2-for-4 with three runs scored. 

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Daniel Quintana (Haymarket, Va./ Paul VI /James Madison) (5.0 IP, 0 H, 3 ER, 3 R, 2 K,  1 BB) (7-2) earned the win. Eric Bohenek (1.1 IP, 6 H, 8 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (0-3) took the loss. 

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Shippensburg for a noon doubleheader.

Notes: The Rams honored seniors Trey Sine, Wyatt Miles, Eli Lam, Aidan Greaney, Oliver Leonard, Trevor Sharp, Jack Silder, Aidan Vanvickle, and Brenden Lewis in a pregame ceremony for Senior Day.
