MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Shepherd University (15-13, 11-5 PSAC East) swept Millersville (21-15, 5-11 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Millersville on Saturday. Shepherd recorded a 5-1 win in game one and added a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in game one when freshman designated player
Morgan Cave (Kearneysville, W.Va./Washington) singled and later scored on a double off the bat of senior third baseman
Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene).
The Rams added four runs in the fifth with a two-run single by freshman pitcher
Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg) keying the rally.
Millersville got a run in the fifth as Angelina Edwards reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on an infield error.
Moore went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.
Colaw (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (2-8) earned the win with relief help from sophomore pitcher
Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (2.0 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB). Nicolina Pezzone (4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) (9-6) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as sophomore outfielder
Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) led off with a double and scored on a single by Moore.
Millersville tied the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI-single by Carly Vaughan.
Shepherd took a 3-1 lead on a two-run homer by junior catcher
Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington).
The Marauders added a run in the sixth on an RBI-double by Jiana Maniscalco.
Moore belted a solo homer in the seventh for the Rams to close out the scoring.
Chambers and Noland went 3-for-4 to lead a 13-hit attack for the Rams. Sophomore first baseman
Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville), freshman outfielder
Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro), and Moore each added a pair of hits.
Jocelyn Langer went 2-for-3 for the Marauders.
Colaw (4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1K, 1 BB) (3-8) gained the win. She had relief help from junior pitcher
Abby McBride (North East, Md./Rising Sun) (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) and Ruffner (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 K, 0 BB). Ruffner picked up her first save of the year. Delaney Troxell (4.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (7-5) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
