SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (16-14, 12-6 PSAC East) split with Shippensburg (20-14, 9-9 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Wednesday. Shepherd recorded a 1-0 win in game one, while Shippensburg gained a 2-1 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd scored the game's only run in the fifth inning in game one when freshman outfielder
Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) doubled and later scored on a single by junior catcher
Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington).
Noland went 2-for-2 to pace the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher
Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 14 K, 3 BB) (12-0) gained the shutout victory. Alicia Ball (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 5 BB) (8-7) took the loss.
Shippensburg took a 2-0 lead in the fifth in the nightcap as Caitlyn Martell led off with a single and Brie Wilmot followed with a two-run homer.
Shepherd got a run in the sixth as sophomore outfielder
Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) singled and later scored on a double off the bat of senior shortstop
Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline).
Martell and Dani Hayward each had a pair of hits to lead the Raiders.
Hayward (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (6-4) earned the win. Freshman pitcher
Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) (3-9) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host East Stroudsburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
