Box Score 2 MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (4-1) split with Holy Family (1-1) in baseball doubleheader action at Mylan Park on Saturday afternoon. The Rams gained a 3-1 win in the opener and dropped a 7-4 decision in the nightcap.
The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the second inning in game one. Redshirt junior shortstop Ethan Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) reached on an error and senior catcher Austin Sofran (Swedesboro, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) followed with a single. Redshirt junior outfielder Bodie Pullen (Winchester, Va./James Wood) reached on a bunt single to plate Burgreen. Redshirt sophomore infielder Ryan Fluharty (Burton, W.Va./Morgantown/USC Upstate) smacked a single to score Sofran. Pullen later scored from third on a passed ball.
Holy Family avoided the shutout with a run in the seventh. Torin McKenzie singled and was replaced by pinch runner Brayden King. King, stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a passed ball.
Pullen went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.
Senior pitcher Allen Miller (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) (6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (1-0) earned the win. Freshman pitcher Logan Bower (Winchester, Va./James Wood) (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) earned the save (2). Ryan McLaughlin (4.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 3 R, 7 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for Holy Family.
Holy Family took a 4-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap with a two-run single from Frank Provenzano keying the rally.
Shepherd cut the lead to 4-2 in the second when junior outfielder Ethan Jones (Oakton, Va./Oakton) scored on a ground out by junior infielder Adam Och (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School/West Liberty). Junior infielder Braylon Conner (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/Hagerstown CC) later singled to score Burgreen.
Holy Family added a run in the third on an RBI-single by Christian Mote single .
The Rams cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth when Jones scored on a ground out by Och.
Holy Family plated one-run in the fifth when Mote walked with the bases loaded to score King.
Shepherd added a run when freshman outfielder Alex Rose (Oakton, Va./Oakton) doubled to plate senior first baseman Nik Rubendall (East Norriton, Pa./Pope John Paul II).
Holy Family capped the scoring at 7-4 in the sixth with a run by Jalen David.
Jones went 2-for-2 with two runs scored to pace the Rams.
Mote went 2-for-2 for Holy Family.
Redshirt junior pitcher Gavin Miller (Exeter Township, Pa./Exeter Township Senior) (3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 5 R, 0 BB, 3 K) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams. Mitchell Bayles (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K) (0-1) earned the win. Grant Carlton (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K) (1) gained the save.
The two teams return to action on Sunday for a single nine-inning game at Mylan Park. First pitch is set for noon.
