CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Shepherd University (1-3) split a pair of games in softball action at Charleston on Saturday. The Rams gained a 4-2 win over Charleston in the early game and dropped a 1-0 decision to Concord (5-2) in a later contest.
The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Charleston. Sophomore outfielder
Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) led off with a walk and junior infielder
Cate Russian (Manassas, Va./Colgan) doubled to move Hartman to third. Freshman catcher
Julia Alexander (Damascus, Md./Damascus) followed with a bunt single to plate Hartman. Russian scored when junior first baseman
Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) grounded out.
Shepherd added a run in the fifth as Russian singled and later scored on a single off the bat of Collis.
Hartman led off the seventh with a walk and scored on a double by Russian to give the Rams a 4-0 lead.
UC got on the scoreboard on a two-run double by Ella Zucchero in the bottom of the seventh.
Russian went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.
Senior pitcher
Natalee Harvey (St. Albans, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union/Kutztown) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 7 K, 4 BB) (1-0) earned the win. Cali Masters (7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 9 K, 3 BB) (1-2) took the loss.
The Rams came up short in the second game against Concord.
Lacie Lewis led off the seventh for the Mounatin Lions with a triple to break up a no-hit bid by junior pitcher
Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington). She scored the game-winner on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Niten.
Freshman outfielder
Lexi McAllister (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Reghan Hintz (7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 K, 1 BB) (3-2) gained the win. Ruffner (6.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 12 K, 1 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on March 4 when they travel to Bowie State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
