Shepherd Softball Splits Pair

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (2-4) split a pair of games in softball action at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. The Rams gained a 3-1 win over Indiana (Pa.) in an early game before dropping a 14-5 decision in a later game against Frostburg State.
 
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the third when junior shortstop Sadie Kittoe (Winchester, Va./James Wood) led off with a single and later scored on a single off the bat of junior infielder Cate Russian (Manassas, Va./Colgan).
 
IUP tied the game in the sixth behind an RBI-single by Ruby Singleton.
 
Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the sixth to secure the win. Junior first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) belted a solo blast, and Kittoe added a run-scoring triple to key the rally.
 
Russian, Collis, and Kittoe each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
 
Delaney Patella went 3-for-3 for the Crimson Hawks.
 
Junior pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 7 H 1 ER, 11 K, 1 BB) (1-2) gained the win. Kendall Young (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (2-2) took the loss.
 
Frostburg State took advantage of 11 hits and three Shepherd errors en route to the 14-5 win in the later game.
 
Kylee Piconi went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Bobcats. Brianna Russo added a 2-for-3 effort and drove in three runs.
 
McAllister and Collis each had a pair of hits for the Rams. Sophomore outfielder Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) had a run-scoring triple and freshman pinch-hitter Lindsay Hunter (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) added a two-run triple to highlight a five-run sixth inning for the Rams.
 
Isabella Donaldson (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) (3-0) earned the win. Senior pitcher Natalee Harvey (St. Albans, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union/Kutztown) (2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
 
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Pace for noon doubleheader.
