MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (9-3) used a 10-hit attack en route to a 9-5 victory over California (Pa.) (3-3) in baseball action at Kendrick Family Ball Park on Sunday afternoon. The Rams ran their winning streak to three games.
California took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Chad Helwich walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Connor Evans.
Shepherd tied the game at 1-1 in the first when junior outfielder Bodie Pullen (Winchester, Va./James Wood) doubled and later scored on a ground out by redshirt sophomore Infielder Ryan Fluharty (Burton, W.Va./Morgantown/USC Upstate).
The Vulcans took a 2-1 lead in the third when Peyton Ford doubled and later scored when Evans grounded out.
Shepherd took a 3-2 lead in the fourth keyed by an RBI-triple from freshman infielder Evan Rosario (Lanham, Md./Jackson-Reed).
Senior first baseman Nik Rubendall (East Norriton, Pa./Pope John Paul II) hit a two-run blast in the fifth to key a three-run inning as the Rams took a 6-2 advantage.
Shepherd added a run in the seventh when redshirt junior outfielder Ethan Jones (Oakton, Va./Oakton) drove in a run when he walked with the bases loaded and plated two more in the eighth on a two-run single from Pullen to take a 9-2 lead.
The Vulcans added three runs in the ninth keyed by a two-run triple from Alex Arrigo.
Pullen went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI to pace the Rams.
Ford went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Vulcans.
Sophomore pitcher Henry Ortiz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown/Towson) (5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 1 K) (3-0) earned the win. Roman Gill (4.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Pitt-Johnstown at 1 p.m.
