LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Shepherd University (8-11, 3-4 PSAC East) swept a doubleheader with Lock Haven (11-11, 3-5 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Lock Haven on Sunday. Shepherd gained an 8-0 win in six innings in game one and added a 3-1 triumph in the nightcap.
The Rams took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind a sacrifice fly from junior first baseman
Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) and a three-run homer from sophomore designated player Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg).
Shepherd added a run in the fourth as sophomore outfielder
Payton Weaver (Fairplay, Md./Williamsport) doubled and later scored on an error.
The Rams added a pair of runs in the fifth on RBI-singles from Colaw and Weaver.
Shepherd scored its final run in the sixth as junior shortstop
Sadie Kittoe (Winchester, Va./James Wood) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior infielder
Cate Russian (Manassas, Va./Colgan).
Sophomore outfielder
Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Rams. Weaver and Colaw each added a pair of hits.
Junior pitcher
Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 12 K, 0 BB) (3-5) picked up the win. Talia Ross (0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (8-3) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second in the nightcap as Weaver and freshman catcher
Julia Alexander (Damascus, Md./Damascus) both singled. Weaver later scored on a ground out by freshman outfielder
Lexi McAllister (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon). Russian later singled to plate Alexander.
Lock Haven answered back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI-single by Erin Van Ness to cut the lead to 2-1.
Shepherd added an insurance run in the seventh as Russian led off with a double and scored on a single by Collis.
Hartman and Collis each had three hits to lead a 12-hit attack for the Rams.
Senior pitcher
Natalee Harvey (St. Albans, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union/Kutztown) (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (3-3) earned the win. Ruffner (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB) gained the save (2). Marissa Horn (7.0 IP, 12 H, 3 ER, 6 K, 0 BB) (1-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to Mansfield for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
