Shepherd Softball Splits with Kutztown; Ruffner Fires No-Hitter

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Shepherd University (15-17, 10-10 PSAC East) split a doubleheader with Kutztown (23-15, 12-6 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Kutztown on Tuesday. The Rams gained a 2-0 win behind a no-hit effort from junior pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) in game one and dropped an 11-1 decision in the nightcap.
 
Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the sixth in the game one victory. Sophomore infielder Jordan Gugliuzza (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by freshman outfielder Lexi McAllister (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon). Freshman infielder Hailey Putnam (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) reached on an error, and sophomore outfielder Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) followed with a double to score Gugliuzza and Putnam.            
 
Ruffner (7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 14 K, 0 BB) (8-7) earned the win. Amanda Slabicki (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (4-8) took the loss.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as junior catcher Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) walked and later scored when junior first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) reached on an error.
 
Kutztown tied the game in the bottom of the first on a solo homer by Emily Henn.
 
The Golden Bears took control of the contest with seven runs in the second. Alexa Stevens had a two-run triple, and Taylor Gearhart added a two-run single to key the scoring.
 
Henn went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and drove in two runs for the Golden Bears. Stevens added a 2-for-4 effort and drove in four runs.
 
Haley Gravish (5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (15-5) picked up the win. Sophomore pitcher Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg) (3.0 IP, 9 H, 8 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (1-3) took the loss.
 
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
