SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (20-20, 15-13 PSAC East) split a doubleheader with Kutztown (31-17, 20-8 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Sara Cree Field on Friday. The Rams recorded a 1-0 win in 10 innings in game one, while Kutztown gained the split with an 11-2 triumph in five innings in the nightcap. Junior pitcher
Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) fanned 19 in the game to tie the single-game mark she set earlier in the season against Millersville. Ruffner (801) also went over 800 strikeouts for her career.
Freshman infielder
Hailey Putnam (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) was placed on second base in the 10th with the tiebreaker rule in effect. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore infielder
Jordan Gugliuzza (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson). Putnam scored the game-winner when sophomore designated player Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg) followed with a single to left.
Colaw led the Rams with a pair of hits.
Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (10.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 19 K, 2 BB) (12-7) earned the complete game win. Amanda Slabicki (9.1 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (6-9) took the loss.
Kutztown took a 2-0 lead in the first in the nightcap with an RBI-double from Morgan Slomkowski keying the rally.
Shepherd got a run in bottom of the first on an RBI-double from junior first baseman
Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville).
The Golden Bears added five runs on four hits and an error to take a 7-1 advantage in the second.
Kutztown got a three-run homer from Alexa Stevens to key a four-run third to take an 11-1 lead.
The Rams added a run in the fourth as sophomore outfielder
Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) doubled and later scored on a single by Gigliuzza.
Stevens and Parker Kraus each had a pair of hits for the Golden Bears
Haley Gravish (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (20-6) gained the win. Sophomore pitcher
Claire Keyser (Sperryville, Va./Fauquier) (1.2 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (1-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host West Chester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
