Shepherd Football Captures Super Region One Title with 28-16 win over Slippery Rock

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University recorded a 28-16 win over Slippery Rock in Super Region One Regional football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday. Shepherd head coach Monte Cater captured his 250th career victory with the win.

Shepherd improves to 12-0, while Slippery Rock falls to 12-2.

Slippery Rock took a 7-0 lead when Shamar Greene scored on a two-yard run with 7:55 left in the first quarter.

Shepherd tied the game when junior quarterback Jeff Ziemba (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) teamed with junior wide receiver Tony Squirewelll (Cheltenham, Md./Bishop McNamara) on a 16-yard scoring pass with 4:39 left in the second quarter.

The Rams drove 99 yards for the score after an interception by senior Keon Robinson (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) at the Shepherd one-yard line.

Shepherd took a 13-7 lead when Ziemba teamed with junior wide receiver Billy Brown (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) on a 74-yard scoring pass as Brown broke a would-be tackle near midfield and raced to the end zone with 10:23 left in the third quarter.

Senior running back Allen Cross (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) rambled 10 yards for a score with 10:06 left in the third quarter to give the Rams a 19-7 advantage.

The scored was setup when Robinson forced and recovered a fumble at the Slippery Rock 10-yard line.

Cross added a 27-yard scoring run with 5:16 left in the third quarter to give the Rams a 25-7 lead.

Dante Nania fired a nine-yard scoring strike to Jaimire Dutrieuille to cut the lead to 25-14 with 4:32 left in the third quarter.

The Rock recorded a safety when Cody Conway tackles Ziemba in the end zone with 45 second left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 25-16.

Shepherd took a 28-16 advantage when senior kicker Ryan Earls (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) connected on a 27-yard field goal with 8:47 left in the game.

Robinson had a 72-yard punt return to set up the field goal.

Ziemba completed 15-of-26 passes for 255 yards for the Rams. Nania connected on 27-of-53 passes for 253 yards.

Brown led the Shepherd receivers with two catches for 89 yards, while Squirewell added seven receptions for 61 yards. Dutrieuille had 10 catches for 61 yards to pace The Rock.

Cross had 13 carries for a game-high 82 yards to pace the Rams. Shamar Greene had 19 carries for 69 yards for Slippery Rock.

Shepherd gained 352 yards of total offense while Slippery Rock had 320 total yards. Each team recorded seven sacks on the day with junior defensive lineman Elijah Norris (Upper Marlboro, Md./Archbishop Carroll/UConn) and Marcus Martin of Slippery Rock each registering three apiece.
 
Robinson led the Rams with a game-high 11 tackles (10 solo). Junior linebacker Octavius Thomas (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) and junior cornerback CJ Davis (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) each added nine stops.  Bob Vernick led Slippery Rock with seven tackles (six solos) and an interception.

The Rams will await word later tonight on next week's national semifinal matchup against Grand Valley State (12-2), a 31-7 winner over Colorado State-Pueblo today.
