SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University smacked 31 hits on the day in doubleheader sweep over University of Charleston in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Monday. The Rams recorded a 10-5 win in game one and added a 16-1 victory in the nightcap. The Rams run their winning streak to 11 games with the sweep.
Sophomore outfielder Jonathan Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in game one. He belted a solo homer.
Senior outfielder
Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. He smacked a two-run blast.
Senior catcher
Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) added a 2-for-3 effort with a two-run double, while sophomore outfielder
Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) and redshirt-freshman designated hitter
Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) each had a pair of hits.
Anthony Brunetti went 1-for-3 with three runs scored to lead the Golden Eagles.
Junior reliever
John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (1-0) picked up the win. Tyler Shreve (1-2) took the loss for Charleston.
Wolfe went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in five in the nightcap. He had a pair of doubles. Carney added a 3-for-3 effort with four runs scored and two RBIs, while Sarty was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Wilson went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. He added a double and a two-run homer. Heleine posted a 2-for-3 outing with a two-run blast.
Benji Adkins went 2-for-3 with an RBI-single to lead the Golden Eagles.
Senior starter
Bryan DiRosario (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary School) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 Ks, 1 BB) picked up the win to improve to 4-0. Dylan Saunders (1-2) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
Shepherd improves to 14-2, 14-2 in conference play, while the University of Charleston falls to 4-10, 3-9. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
