Balanced Scoring Leads Shepherd Men Past Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Sophomore forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) scored 18 points and junior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) added 17 to lead Shepherd University (11-7, 8-4 MEC) to an 84-79 win over Glenville State (8-8, 5-7 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at Glenville State on Saturday.

Burgess' 18 points were a season-high mark. He also grabbed seven boards. Carr added a team-high five assists.

The Rams had six players in double digits as senior guard Niam Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) tossed in 16 points, junior guard Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) had 12, junior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 11, while sophomore forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) totaled 10. McTavish also grabbed a game and career-high 13 rebounds.

Brett Morris scored a game-high 23 points for the Pioneers. Jalon Plummer added 18 points, while Brook Ely had 13.

Shepherd led by as many as 17 points in the second half, but Glenville State rallied to within a point at 80-79 after a layup by Morris with 1:14 left in regulation.

A pair of free throws by Carr with 17 seconds left gave the Rams a three-point cushion, and Muhammad added a dunk before the buzzer to seal the win.

Shepherd connected on 47.8 percent (33-69) from the floor with a 31.8 percent (7-22) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 91.7 percent (11-12) of their free throws.

Glenville State shot 47.5 percent (27-61) from the floor with a 41.4 percent effort (12-29) from three-point range. The Pioneers shot 73.3 percent (11-15) from the charity stripe.

Shepherd had a 41-30 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed nine.

The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host UVa-Wise for a 7:30 p.m. game.
