Shepherd Men Down UVa-Wise

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) scored 24 points to lead Shepherd University (12-7, 9-4 MEC) to an 81-66 win over UVa-Wise (5-14, 3-10 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday night.

Davis connected on 9-of-14 field goals with a 6-of-11 effort from beyond the arc.

The Rams had five players score in double digits. Junior guard Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) had 17 points, sophomore forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added 12, junior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) had 11, while sophomore forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) tossed in 10.

Senior guard Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) added seven points, 10 rebounds, and six assists.

Michal Seals scored 24 points and handed out four assists to pace the Cavaliers. Dimitri Sousa added 15 points, while Taiwo Badmus added eight points and nine rebounds.

Shepherd had a 42-34 advantage at the break behind 14 first half points from Davis.

The Rams opened the second half on an 11-3 run to take a 16-point advantage at 53-37 after a layup by Muhammad with 15:39 remaining.

The Cavaliers used an 8-0 to cut the lead to single digits at 53-45 after a three-pointer by Seals with 12:49 left.

Shepherd took a double digit lead for good at 59-49 on three-point play by Muhammad with 10:18 left.

Shepherd connected on 50.8 percent (32-63) from the floor with a 45.2 percent (14-31) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 50 percent (3-6) of their free throws.

UVa-Wise shot 44.4 percent (24-54) from the floor with a 30.8 percent effort (8-26) from three-point range. The Cavaliers shot 66.7 percent (10-15) from the charity stripe.

Shepherd had a 36-33 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 13 turnovers and committed 11.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Concord for a 4 p.m. game.
