SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored a career-high 23 points to lead six Rams in double figures as Shepherd University (12-8, 8-6 MEC) knocked off 19th-ranked Wheeling Jesuit (15-4, 11-3 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday. Shepherd recorded its first win over a ranked team since the Rams handed #22 Pitt-Johnstown a 70-55 setback on Jan. 3, 2009.
Lang hit on 5-of-7 field goals with a 3-of-4 effort from three-point range. He was 10-of-10 from the charity stripe. He added a game-high six assists and three steals.
Freshman guard Cam Stephens (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) scored a career-high 16 points. He drained 3-of-5 field goals (all three-pointers) and hit on 7-of-10 free throws.
Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) posted his 10th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 12 points, while junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) had 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Devin Smith Baltimore, Md./Randallstown/Richard Bland CC) also tossed in 10 points.
Haywood Highsmith scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to pace the Cardinals. Pat Moseh added 23 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists.
Shepherd had a 34-26 lead at the break behind a 48.1 percent (13-27) first-half field goal percentage.
The Rams led by as many as 20 points in the second half. Wheeling Jesuit rallied to cut the lead to eight at 92-84 with 58 seconds remaining. Shepherd sunk 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Shepherd connected on 48.1 percent (26-54) from the floor with a 42.9 percent (12-28) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 81.4 percent (35-43) of their free throws.
Wheeling Jesuit shot 44.4 percent (28-63) from the floor with a 33.3 percent effort (9-27) from three-point range. The Cardinals shot 62.2 percent (23-37) from the charity stripe.
Wheeling Jesuit had a 38-37 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed 13.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Notre Dame for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
