Stocks Tosses No-Hitter; Shepherd Softball Takes Pair

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (17-5) swept Millersville (14-15) in softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Wednesday. Junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) tossed a no-hitter in an 8-0 win in game one and the Rams added a 4-1 victory in the nightcap to complete the sweep. Shepherd extended its winning streak to 11 games.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind a two-run single from sophomore second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) and a two-run inside-the-park home run by senior outfielder Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland).

Shepherd took a 6-0 advantage in the third when Sturgill launched a two-run blast to left field.

The Rams completed the scoring in the fourth on RBI-singles from freshman third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and senior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier).

Purtell and Sturgill each had a pair of hits and scored two runs for the Rams.

Stocks (5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 10 K, 2 BB) (7-1) earned the win in five innings for the Rams. Emma Bevard (3.2 IP, 9 H, 8 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (6-4) took the loss.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second in the nightcap behind an RBI-single by Stocks.

The Rams added three runs in the third with a two-run double by senior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) keying the rally.

Millersville scored a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Brianna Battavio. The Marauders had the bases loaded with one out and Shepherd freshman reliever Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) retired the next two batters to seal the victory.

Gilligan went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Senior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (4.0 IP, 1 H, 5 K, 3 BB) (5-2) gained the win in the nightcap. Maddie Guinane (2.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (2-4) took the loss for the Marauders.
