GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd (2-1) went 1-1 on the day at the Glenville State Tournament on Saturday. The Rams gained a 5-2 win over Tiffin in an early game and dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Charleston in a later contest.
Tiffin took a 1-0 in the first inning as Brooke Lambert walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kaylee Savage.
Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in third inning against the Dragons. Senior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) doubled and later scored on a single off the bat of sophomore outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim). Beeler later scored on an error.
The Rams added two more runs in the fifth. Junior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) led off with a single and Beeler followed with a double. Purtell scored on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) and Beeler was plated on a single off the bat of senior second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier).
Tiffin rallied with a run in the sixth as Laura Teunion-Smith walked and later scored on a ground out by Taylor Whalen.
Sophomore designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) belted a solo homer in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Davis had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher Katie Laing (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) (1-0) fanned two en route to a complete game win. Victoria Edwards took the loss for Tiffin.
Danielle Bauer tossed a one-hitter to lead Charleston to a 3-0 win in the later game. She fanned six and walked none. Senior pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (0-1) took the loss.
Megan Eder went 1-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs for the Golden Eagles.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they face Findlay at 11 a.m. and West Virginia State at 3 p.m. in final day action of the Glenville State Tournament.
