SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (4-1, 2-0 PSAC) swept Mansfield (0-2, 0-2 PSAC) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Sunday. The Rams recorded a 10-0 win in five innings in game one and added a 12-2 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.
Sophomore outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) hit a three-run triple in the first inning in game one to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.
The Rams added two runs in the second behind an RBI-triple by junior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and an RBI-single off the bat of sophomore outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim).
Shepherd plated four runs in the third with a two-run triple by keying the rally. Junior catcher Haley Dawson (Inwood, W.Va./Washington) belted a two-run triple to key the rally.
The Rams completed the scoring in the fourth on an RBI-triple by freshman infielder Sophia Pell (Winchester, Va./Millbrook).
Purtell went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in to pace the Rams.
Mansfield's lone hit came on a single by Lacey O'Donnell in the third.
Junior pitcher Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (4.0 IP, 1 H, 9 Ks, 4 BB) (2-0) gained the win for the Rams. Alexis Easling (3.0 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 6 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Mounties.
Shepherd scored seven runs on five hits in the first inning in the nightcap. Two-run singles by freshman outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) and Purtell keyed the scoring outburst.
The Rams added three more runs in the second. Forte had a two-run triple and Beeler added an RBI-single to highlight the rally.
Mansfield countered with two runs in the top of the third on a two-run single by Joelle Snyder.
Shepherd answered back on the bottom of the third with a pair of runs as sophomore first baseman Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) and sophomore catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) each drove in a run.
Burger and Forte each had three hits to lead a 13-hit attack for the Rams.
Snyder led the Mounties with a pair of hits.
Senior pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (1-1) earned the win. Danielle Goff (4.0 IP, 13 H, 12 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss for Mansfield.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Bowie State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
Notes: Shepherd played at home for the first time since they split a doubleheader with West Virginia State on April 28, 2019 … the Rams belted six triples on the day with five in game one and one in the nightcap.
