Shepherd Softball Sweeps Shippensburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Shepherd University (12-1, 8-0 PSAC East) had 29 hits on the day en route to a sweep of Shippensburg (1-5, 1-5 PSAC East) in PSAC softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. The Rams recorded a 12-6 win in game one and added a 16-4 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.  

The Rams plated five runs on five hits in the second inning in game one. 

After Shippensburg got a run in the third, Shepherd answered back with a pair of runs on a two-run blast off the bat of junior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville). To take a 7-1 lead. 

Shippensburg scored four runs on one hit and two errors in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5.  

The Raiders added a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-6 behind a sacrifice fly off the bat of Courtney Coy. 

Shepherd added five insurance runs in the sixth as senior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), senior shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills), junior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando), and Purtell each drove in a run. 

Senior second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) and sophomore outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) each had a pair of hits for the Rams. 

Taylor Myers, Alyssa Nehlen, and Hannah Marsteller each had two hits for the Raiders. 

Junior pitcher Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (4.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 4 Ks, 5 BB) (4-0) gained the win for the Rams. Freshman pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 Ks, 1 BB)  gained the save. Tressa Kagarise (1.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (1-3) took the loss for the Raiders. 

Purtell, Beeler, and freshman outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) each had three hits to lead an 18-hit attack in the nightcap. Purtell went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, Beeler went 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Forte was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke), sophomore catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central), and Burger each added a pair of hits. 

Nehlen went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a two-run inside-the-park home run to pace the Raiders. 

Sophomore pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (4-0) earned the win. Maelynn Leber (3.1 IP, 13 H, 12 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (1-3) took the loss for Shippensburg. 

The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Shippensburg
