SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (14-3, 10-2 PSAC East) dropped a pair of games to Kutztown (15-3, 12-2 PSAC East) in PSAC softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Friday. The Golden Bears recorded a 10-6 win in game one and added a 5-4 victory in the nightcap. Shepherd's win streak was halted at 12 games.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the third inning in game one behind a solo homer by junior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and a two-run blast by sophomore designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke).
After Kutztown scored two runs on a two-run homer by Hannah Auvil in the fifth, Shepherd plated a pair of runs to take a 5-2 lead. Senior second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) had an RBI-single to key the rally.
The Golden Bears scored seven runs on four hits in the sixth. Alyssa Donato and Kate Ostaszewski each had two-run singles to highlight the inning.
Shepherd cut the lead to 9-6 in the bottom of the frame as junior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando) doubled and was replaced by freshman pinch-runner Chloee Burton (Maurertown, Va./Central). Mantz. Burton scored on a ground out by junior catcher Haley Dawson (Inwood, W.Va./Washington).
Kutztown added a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Ostaszewski.
Hannah Reimel went 3-for-4, while Ostaszewski and Donato each added a pair of hits for the Golden Bears.
Purtell and Seymour each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Bridget Bailey (7.0 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 0 K, 5 BB) (8-0) gained the win for the Golden Bears. Junior pitcher Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (5.2 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 7 Ks, 5 BB) (4-1) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 2-0 in the first in the nightcap behind RBI-singles by freshman outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) and Brown.
Kutztown tied the game in the second on a two-run homer by Reimel.
Shepherd took a 4-2 advantage in the fourth on an RBI-triple by Purtell and an RBI-single by senior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).
Kutztown scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
The Golden Bears scored the game-winning run in the sixth as Jenna Lipowski led of with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Mya Zettlemoyer. Zettlemoyer scored on a double off the bat of Donato.
Donato went 2-for-3 to lead Kutztown.
Baker went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams.
Amber Brugger (6.2 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (3-2) earned the win in relief for Kutztown. Sophomore pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (5-1) took the loss.
The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Kutztown
