Shepherd Softball Sweeps Bowie State

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Shepherd University (6-1) swept Mansfield (0-4) in non-conference softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Tuesday. The Rams posted a 5-1 win in game one and added a 7-0 triumph in the nightcap. The nightcap was called in the middle of the sixth inning due to darkness. 

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the third inning in game one with three runs on four hits and an error. Sophomore outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), sophomore designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke), and senior shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) each drove in a run. 

The Rams tacked on two runs in the fifth behind a two-run double off the bat of junior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando). 

Bowie State scored a run in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Aliyah Smith reached on a walk and later scored on a ground out by Makayla Belanger. 

Senior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams. 

Shayna Gordon went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs. 

Sophomore pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 7 K, 2 BB) (2-0) earned the win. Haley Bivens (6.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (0-1) took the loss for Bowie State. 

The Rams took a 4-0 lead in the first in the nightcap. A two-run single by Burger highlighted the rally. 

Shepherd added three runs in the second with Baker and Seymour each driving in a run. 

Freshman outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville), senior second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier), and Burger each had two hits to lead the Rams. 

Freshman pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 5 H, 6 Ks, 0 BB) (1-0) gained her first collegiate win for the Rams. Evelyn Buehlman (5.0 IP, 11 H, 7 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs. 

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Bloomsburg for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
