Shepherd Baseball Falls at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Donovan Ford went 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead Newberry (7-3) to a 14-6 win over Shepherd (1-3) in baseball action at Newberry on Sunday 

Newberry took an 8-0 lead in the first inning. The Wolves got two-run singles from John Allen Forrester and Ford to key the scoring. 

Newberry added single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to take an 11-0 advantage. 

Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the fifth behind a two-run single off the bat of redshirt-sophomore infielder Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC). 

The Rams added a run in the sixth as sophomore infielder Gino Serechia (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) led off with a single and moved to third on a double by redshirt-sophomore outfielder Trey Sine (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg). Serechia scored on a ground out by junior infielder Nicco German (Burke, Va./Falls Church). 

Shepherd got a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 11-5. Sophomore outfielder Mike Guzzardo (Mullica Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep/RCSJ Cumberland) walked and moved to second when Serechia reached on an error. The pair later scored on a single by Sine. 

Newberry got a run in the seventh and two more in the eight to take a 14-5 advantage. 

Shepherd scored the game's final run in the ninth as graduate student infielder Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) led off with a double and later scored on a ground out by graduate student catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac).                    

Senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) and redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) each went 2-for-3 with a run scored to pace the Rams. 

Forrester added three hits for the Wolves. 

Matias Marchesini (3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) (2-0) gained the win for the Wolves. Redshirt-freshman pitcher Zac Rose (Charles Town, W.Va./Jefferson) (0.0 IP, 2 H, 5 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams. 

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to UNC Pembroke for a 3 p.m. game.
