PEMBROKE, N.C. – Shepherd University (5-4) swept Lake Erie College (0-8) in doubleheader baseball action at UNC Pembroke on Saturday. The Rams gained a 9-1 win in game one and added a 5-0 triumph in the nightcap behind a no-hit effort by redshirt-sophomore pitcher Trevor Sharp (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman).
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap. Junior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) walked, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb).
The Rams added three runs in the third behind an RBI single by Mulhall and a two-run blast by redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC).
Shepherd completed the scoring in the fifth as Carter drew a walk and later scored on a single by sophomore outfielder Mike Guzzardo (Mullica Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep/RCSJ Cumberland).
Guzzardo went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Sharp (7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 10 K, 2 BB) (1-0) gained the win for the Rams. Sixty-three of his 100 pitches were strikes. Zach Saffell (6.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Storm.
The Rams used a 13-hit attack en route to a 9-1 win in game one.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-double by Daggers.
The Rams added a run in the third on a solo blast by Mulhall.
The Storm got a solo homer from Graham Solak in the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1.
Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer by Guzzardo to take a 4-1 lead.
The Rams plated four unearned runs on four hits in the fifth to take an 8-1 advantage.
Mulhall hit a solo homer in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Mulhall went 2-for-4 with three runs scored to pace the Rams.
Senior infielder Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), redshirt-sophomore infielder Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC), and Daggers each added a pair of hits.
Solak went 2-for-3 to lead the Storm.
Junior pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James School/Maryland) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 3 BB) (1-0) gained the win for the Rams. Robert Helt (4.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Storm.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Lake Erie for a noon doubleheader at UNC Pembroke.
Notes: Sharp's no-hit effort is the first no-hitter for Shepherd since Jamie Ware, Andrew Fincham, and Eric Jones combined on a no-hitter against Columbia Union on March 14, 1996 … Sharp's effort is the fourth no-hitter in program history.
