ATHENS, W.Va. – Shepherd University (5-2) dropped a 20-11 decision to Concord (3-5) in baseball action at Concord on Friday afternoon.
Concord took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Korbin Bostic singled to score Nick DiSanti.
Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the second inning behind an RBI-ground out from redshirt junior outfielder Ethan Jones (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and a run-scoring double from junior infielder Braylon Conner (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/Hagerstown CC)
The Mountain Lions plated three in the second to take a 4-2 lead. A two-run single from Matthew DiSanti keyed the rally.
Concord scored four runs in the third inning highlighted by a solo homer from Bostic to key the rally.
The Rams scored four runs in the fourth inning when redshirt sophomore Infielder Ryan Fluharty (Burton, W.Va./Morgantown/USC Upstate) hit a three-run blast to cut the lead to 8-6.
The Mountain Lions took a 12-6 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The rally was keyed by a RBI-double from Austin Hear.
Shepherd scored one in the top of the fifth on a solo homer from freshman outfielder Alex Rose (Oakton, Va./Oakton).
Concord took a 13-7 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Bostic scored on a Tyson Burke walk.
Concord upped its lead to 15-7 on sacrifice flies from Atticus Goodson and Hear in the sixth.
The Rams plated two-runs to cut the lead to 15-9 in the top of the seventh when Jones doubled to knock in Rose, and Jones later scored on a single from freshman infielder Etan Rosario (Lanham, Md./Jackson-Reed).
The Mountain Lions scored three in the bottom of the seventh behind a three-run blast from Goodson.
Shepherd cut the score to 18-10 when Fluharty scored on an RBI from Burgreen in the eighth.
After Concord added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, the Rams capped the scoring in the ninth when freshman infielder Andrew O'Brien (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) scored when freshman outfielder Landon Pence (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) was hit by a pitch.
Fluharty went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs to pace the Rams.
Matthew DiSanti went 3-for-5 with one run scored and five RBIs for Concord
Senior pitcher Allen Miller (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) (2.2 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 8 R, 1 BB, 2 K) (1-1) took the loss. Braylen Baker (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) (1-0) earned the win.
The two teams return to action for a noon doubleheader on Saturday
