INDIANA, Pa. – Shepherd University (12-8) dropped a pair of games to Indiana (Pa) (8-6) in baseball doubleheader action at IUP on Sunday. The Rams dropped a 9-8 decision in game one and came up short on a 6-3 outcome in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the opener when redshirt junior shortstop Ethan Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) singled and later scored on a single from freshman infielder Andrew O'Brien (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood).
Freshman catcher Alex Rose (Oakton, Va./Oakton) had a three-run scoring double to give the Rams a 5-0 lead in the fourth.
After IUP scored one in the fourth on a RBI-single from Anthony Annichine, Shepherd took an 8-1 lead in the fifth with three runs. Senior first baseman Nik Rubendall (East Norriton, Pa./Pope John Paul II) belted a two-run double to key the rally.
The Crimson Hawks rallied with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to gain the 9-8 win. David Kessler hit a two-run homer to highlight the scoring.
Rubendall went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and drove in two to pace the Rams.
Kessler went 3-for-4 to pace the Crimson Hawks.
Christian Wilkinson (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) (1-0) earned the win. Nathan Porath (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0BB, 0 K) (2) earned the save. Senior pitcher Devin Mattei (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (0.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) (1-1) took the loss.
IUP took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap when Kessler walked and later scored on an error.
The Crimson Hawks took advantage of run-scoring singles in the second from Carter Kirsch and Ricardo Aponte to take a 3-0 lead.
IUP took a 4-0 lead in the third on a solo blast from Elijah Dunn.
The Crimson Hawks scored a run in the fourth when Kirsch singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly.
In the sixth, IUP took a 6-0 advantage when Yaniel Heredia scored on a wild pitch.
Shepherd plated three runs in the seventh with a two-run single by freshman catcher Kory Barbier (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) keying the scoring.
Heredia went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to pace IUP.
Braden Shepherd (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K) (1-2) earned the win. Mark Luke (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) (1) earned the save. Sophomore pitcher Riley Morgan (Ranson, W.Va./Jefferson) (4.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) (2-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Seton Hill for a single game at 2 p.m.
