Shepherd Baseball Wins Pair in Walk-Off Fashion to Sweep Bloomsburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Shepherd University (14-8, 2-0 PSAC East) swept Bloomsburg (9-5, 0-2 PSAC East) in baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams gained a 6-5 victory in game one and won 9-8 in the nightcap.

Bloomsburg took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a two-run homer from Drew Balestrini. 

The Huskies added a pair of runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead. 

Shepherd scored a run in the fourth when redshirt junior outfielder Bodie Pullen (Winchester, Va./James Wood) tripled and scored on a ground out by freshman infielder Evan Rosario (Lanham, Md./Jackson-Reed).

The Rams tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth behind a RBI-triple from Pullen and a run-scoring double from junior infielder Braylon Conner (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/Hagerstown CC). 

Shepherd took a 5-4 lead in the sixth when redshirt junior outfielder Ethan Jones  (Oakton, Va./Oakton) singled and later scored on a sacrifice-fly from freshman catcher Alex Rose  (Oakton, Va./Oakton). 

Bloomsburg tied the game 5-5 in the seventh on a solo shot from Dylan Hirsh. 

The Rams gained the win in the seventh. Redshirt sophomore infielder Ryan Fluharty (Burton, W.Va./Morgantown/USC Upstate) reached on an infield single and moved to third on a double by senior first baseman Nik Rubendall (East Norriton, Pa./Pope John Paul II). Redshirt sophomore utility player Colin Ahart (Pennsauken, N.J./St. Joseph Academy) followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Rams the victory

Pullen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to pace the Rams.

Balestrini went 2-for-4 with one run and three runs batted in to pace the Huskies.

Freshman pitcher Logan Bower (Winchester, Va./James Wood) (0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) (2-1) earned the win. Trevor Lugara (0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) (0-1) took the loss. 

Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap when Grant Russo reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Hirsh. 

Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the first on a pair of unearned runs.

The Huskies took a 4-2 lead in the second.  Jace Jarmon hit a two-run double and later scored on a single by Grant Russo.

The Rams tied the game 4-4 in the second on a two-run blast from Pullen. 

Bloomsburg took a 6-4 lead in the third with run-scoring singles from Mike Miller and Casey O'Brien keying the rally. 

Shepherd scored one in the third when Rubendall singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from redshirt junior shortstop Ethan Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook).

Bloomsburg took a 7-5 lead in the fourth when Balestrini reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly from O'Brien. 

The Rams got a run in the fifth on a run-scoring triple from Ahart to cut the lead to 7-6.

The Huskies took an 8-6 lead in the sixth when Balestrini singled and later scored on an error. 

Shepherd scored one in the sixth as Rosario singled and later scored on a fielder's choice. 

The Rams scored a pair in the seventh to earn the sweep. Ahart drew a lead-off walk and was replaced by junior pinch-runner Nathaniel Brookshire (Winchester, Va./Millbrook). Burgreen followed with a single. Brookshire and Burgreen both later scored on a throwing error. 

Pullen went 1-for-4 with one run scored and drove in two to pace the Rams.

O'Brien went 1-for-2 with one run scored and drove in another to pace the Huskies.

Junior pitcher Tre Rex (Barnesville, Ohio/Harrison Central/Akron) (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K) (1-1) earned the win. Xander Velez  (1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) (0-2) took the loss

The two teams return to action on Sunday for a doubleheader at Bloomsburg at 1 p.m.
