SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (12-4) split with Charleston (2-14) in baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. The Rams dropped a 7-5 decision in the opener, but they posted an 11-5 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first in the opener. Redshirt sophomore Infielder Ryan Fluharty (Burton, W.Va./Morgantown/USC Upstate) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and junior outfielder Ethan Jones (Oakton, Va./Oakton) added an RBI-single to key the scoring.
Charleston got a solo blast from Samuel Lemond in the third and Trent Dosenbach added another in the fourth to cut the score to 3-2.
Charleston tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth on an RBI-single from Andrew Kobryn.
Shepherd got an RBI-double from redshirt sophomore utility Colin Ahart (Pennsauken, N.J./St. Joseph Academy) and a run-scoring single from junior infielder Braylon Conner (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/Hagerstown CC) in the fifth to take a 5-3 advantage.
UC rallied with four runs in the seventh. Ryan Comella hit a three-run single to highlight the rally.
Fluharty went 1-for-3 to pace the Rams.
JP Schulz (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K) (1-0) earned the win. Freshman pitcher Logan Bower (Winchester, Va./James Wood) (1.1 IP, 1 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) (1-1) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap when junior outfielder Bodie Pullen (Winchester, Va./James Wood) walked and scored on a double from Fluharty.
The Rams took advantage of an error and a hit batter in the fourth to plate two runs to take a 3-0 lead.
After Charleston scored a run in the fifth, Shepherd scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-1 lead. Pullen had a two-run single and Fluharty smacked a three-run double to key the rally
Redshirt junior catcher Wyatt Lamb (Asbury, W.Va./Mt. Calvary Christian School (Pa.) doubled and later scored on a passed ball in the sixth to give the Rams an 11-1 lead.
Charleston plated four runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from Collin Kemp.
Fluharty went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs to pace the Rams.
Kemp went 2-for-4 for the Golden Eagles.
Sophomore pitcher Riley Morgan (Ranson, W.Va./Jefferson) (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) (1-2) earned the win. Kyle Evenhus (3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K) (0-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Indiana (Pa) for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
