Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Mansfield

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Shepherd University (21-12, 8-4 PSAC East) swept Mansfield (11-21, 2-10 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Saturday. The Rams gained a 9-2 triumph in game one and added a 22-16 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one when redshirt junior outfielder Bodie Pullen (Winchester, Va./James Wood) walked, stole second, and later scored on a double from redshirt sophomore outfielder Colin Ahart (Pennsauken, N.J./St. Joseph Academy).

The Rams took a 4-0 lead in the second highlighted by a run-scoring triple from Pullen.

The Rams plated one in the fourth with a solo blast from redshirt junior outfielder Ethan Jones  (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and added another in the fifth with a homer from senior first baseman Nik Rubendall (East Norriton, Pa./Pope John Paul II).

Shepherd took advantage of an error by the shortstop and a wild pitch in the sixth inning to take a 9-0 lead. 

Mansfield scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh highlighted by a run-scoring single from Kahale Burns.

Pullen had three hits with three runs scored and two batted in to pace the Rams. 

Sekluski went 1-for-2 to pace the Mountaineers.

Senior pitcher Allen Miller (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 K, 2 BB) (3-2) earned the win. Quinn Shindler(5.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (2-4) took the loss.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a Pullen homer.

Mansfield plated four in the second highlighted by a Burns two-run single.

The Rams took a 10-0 lead in the second highlighted by a three-run blast from redshirt junior catcher Wyatt Lamb (Asbury, W.Va./Mt. Calvary Christian School (Pa.). 

Shepherd took a 19-4 lead in the fourth.  Rubendall, Jones, and redshirt sophomore designated-hitter Ryan Fluharty (Burton, W.Va./Morgantown/USC Upstate) each had a two-run blast.

Mansfield scored four runs in the fourth and added four more in the fifth highlighted by an Evan Laredo two-run single and a Jack Carozzoni three-run double. 

The Rams took a 21-12 lead in the sixth. The scoring was highlighted by a solo homer from freshman outfielder Sam Hefner (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson).

The Mountaineers scored four in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by a Carozzoni two-run single. 

Shepherd capped the score at 22-16 in the seventh when junior Infielder Braylon Conner (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/Hagerstown CC) walked and scored on a single from Hefner. 

Junior third baseman Nathaniel Brookshire (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) went 3-for-4 with three runs to pace Shepherd.

Burns went 4-for-5 with three runs to lead Mansfield.

Senior pitcher Devin Matei (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) (4-1) earned the win. Tyler Swineford  (1.2 IP, 8 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (2-4) took the loss.

The Rams return to action Friday when they travel to Kutztown for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
