Excelled in football for the Rams during the 1949-50 seasons, and again in 1954 and 1955. Set a then-school record for rushing yards in 1949 with 539 and gained over 1,000 yards in his first two years, before serving in Korea from 1951-53, where he earned a distinguished flying cross. Was a member of the 1955 WVIAC Championship team, the first team in school history to win the conference championship. The '55 squad also posted a record of 8-0, to become the first undefeated Shepherd football team. Barney played on four teams which posted a combined record of 23-8-2 (.727).
