Generall regarded as one of the top players in the history of the WVIAC, Sewell was a standout for the men's basketball team from 1973-77, the most successful era in Shepherd basketball history. A three-time First Team WVIAC All-Star, he led the Rams to an amazing 90-17 (.841) record during his career. With Sewell leading the way, SC played in three straight WVIAC title games and won the 1976 NCAA III South Atlantic Regional Title, the first NCAA regional title in Shepherd history. The 1975-76 team won a national-best 33 games, including 22 straight to open the season. Sewell concluded his career ranked second on the all-time scoring list (2,205), and seventh on the rebounding list (526).
