Starkey is the school's all-time winningest basketball coach, with an overall 360-205 record, and a 191-133 conference mark from 1968 to 1988. In his 20 years as head coach, nine of his teams won 20 games or more, including the 1976 team that posted a 33-3 record, posting more wins than any other collegiate basketball team at any level in the country that year. Starkey also served as the college's Director of Athletics from 1976 to 1980 and had stints as an assistant football coach and head baseball coach. Excelled as a three-sport athlete, earning varsity letters in football as a center and line backer, swimming in the freestyle events and baseball as a second baseman and shortstop.
