Excelled in swimming as he earned varsity letters from 1971-74 and led the team each season in individual points scored. In 1971, he was the first swimmer to represent Shepherd College at the NAIA National Championships and competed at the national event over the next three seasons as well. In 1972 he broke the state record in the 200-yard breaststroke and established a new record for the 100-yard breaststroke in 1973. As a freshman in 1971 he was ranked 23rd in the country by NAIA and climbed as high as No. 2 in 1973 when he also earned All-America Honorable Mention honors for the second consecutive year.
