Gilbert Miller

Miller was a star pitcher for the Rams from 1946-47 and also starred for the Shepherd basketball team.  Miller hit .403 as a sophomore and .415 as a junior.  He posted an 8-2 record during his junior year, and did not compete his senior year because he was signed by Connie Mack to a professional contract with the Philadelphia Athletics.  Also a standout on the basketball court, Miller was the second-leading scorere and rebounder during his sophomore and junior years.  After a knee injury cut his baseball career short, Miller went on to become a successful coachs at Hedgesville High School.  Miller never had a losing season in 15 years as the varsity baseball coach, 11 years as the freshman basketball coach and 14 years as the varsity basketball coach. Miller earned West Virginia Basketball Coach of the Year honors after leading the Eagles to the Class A State Championship in 1970.  He was later named West Virginia Baseball Coach of the Year in 1975 and West Virginia Athletic Director of the Year in 1987.
