Kline has been instrumental in the success of the football team as an assistant coach since 2003. Kline will enter his 25th consecutive year as a part of the Shepherd football program. A defensive lineman for the Rams from 1998-2002, Kline was a part of two conference championship teams and was a team captain as a senior. As an assistant coach Kline has been a vital part of 12 conference championships, 14 regional appearances, five Super Region One Champion teams, and a national championship appearance. He has mentored numerous players who have played professional football including Howard Jones and Tre Sullivan (NFL), and DeJuan Neal (XFL). He helped Deante Steele set numerous return records as specials teams coach and as Shepherd's defensive coordinator Kline helped the Rams top NCAA II in rushing defense from 2011-2014. He has also coached three conference Defensive Players of the Year. Kline was named Football Scoop Coordinator of the Year in 2013 and was runner-up in 2014.
