Omps was a three-year starter for the Shepherd men's basketball team from 1953-57.  He led his team in free throw shooting with 76 percent.  He was a member of the college's first track and field team in 1954, competing in the long jump, sprints and relay events from 1954-56.  He also served as a student trainer for the football team, including 1955 when the Rams compiled their only undefeated season.  During his college career, he was included in "Who's Who Among Young Men in America" in 1957.  Upon graduation, he was a successful high school coach, including 15 years at Handley, where he coached basketball and track, and served as Director of Athletics from 1974-86.  He has been involved in officiating athletic events for 30 years.
