Excelled in football and basketball, named to the 1955 Small College All-America Football Team; selected All-West Virginia Conference as a senior. Captained Shepherd's first conference championship football team in 1955, also captained the basketball team as a senior, led the West Virginia Conference in passing, total offense and pass completions during his senior year. Upon graduating, Shearer served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Shearer left the service and signed to play with the Baltimore Colts, but was not able to play due to injuries sustained to his throwing arm while in the Marines.
