Excelled in football, lettering four years as a safety. His 24 career interceptions tie him for lead in the WVIAC and are tops at Shepherd entering 1993. His 11 interceptions in 1982 topped the Ram single-seasoncharts, tied a WVIAC single-season record, and ranked second in the country that year as he enter NAIA First Team All-America honors. Known for his speed and tenacity, he made several game-saving tackles, including one in the 1979 homecoming game against West Virginia Wesleayn, when he tackled Preston Wright inches short of the goal line on a 79-yard pass play, with no time remaining, to help preserver a 20-17 win.
