Excelled in football as an offensive guard from 1969-72.  He earned Little All-America Honorable Mention honors in 1971, was the only Shepherd player named to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's All-Conference squad in both 1970 and 1971.  Was voted as the Civitan Bowl's Most Valuable Lineman in the 1971 game. Slade served as the tri-captain of the 1972 WVIAC Championship team.  Upon graduation, he became an assitant football coach at Shepherd and served his alma mater from 1973-1981.  From Shepherd, he served as an assistant coach at several NCAA DI schools, including the University of Washington, where he coached in two Rose Bowls and was a member of the 1991 National Championship team.
