Mitchell was a four-sport athlete, participating in football, basketball, baseball and tennis for the Rams.  He was a four-year starter for football as an end and basketball as a forward, with one letter winning season in baseball.  Mitchell was crowned college's tennis champion before it was an official intercollegiate sport.  He served as class president during the 1937-38 academic year.  After graduation, he coached football, basketball and baseball at the high school level, including 14 years as head coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Youngstown, OH, where he served as principal for eight years.
