Hillyard starred for the Rams both offensively and defensively in the mid 1950's as a two-way player. He was a standout on the defensive line, where he created havoc for opposing offenses despite his small stature. Hillyard was named to the Tau Kappa Epsilon Little All-American Team as a senior in 1957. With Hillyard helping to lead the way, the Rams posted a 22-8-1 (.726) record from 1954-57 and posted winning records in three of his four years. In addition, the 1955 team won the school's first-ever WVIAC Title with a perfect 8-0 record. The '55 team remains the only team in school history to go undefeated.
