Boyd was a four-year letterwinner in football as an offensive and defensive lineman. He helped guide he Rams to a 21-9-2 (.688) mark. He was a two-time first team WVIAC All-Conference selection (1954, 1956). Despite missing four games due to a knee injury, Boyd earned WVIAC second team honors as a member of the 1955 undefeated team. Boyd was also honored as a member of the All-Time Players All-Conference WVIAC Team (1924-74 50th Anniversary). Boyd later went on to a very successful career as a high school coach and physical education teacher. He coached football and track at Waynesboro High School (VA) from 1957-66, highlighted by a district championship in football in 1957, a state champion in track and field in 1960, and a district champion in track and field in 1966. He also coached the junior varsity basketball team to an 18-0 season in 1957-58. Boyd also coached football and track at George Washington High School in Alexandria, VA from 1966-68. Boyd then moved to coach football and track at George C. Marshall High School in Fairfax, VA, from 1968-81. He coached three district champion teams in track and field and had numerous state individual champions.
