Chuey was a four-year standout on the Shepherd basketball team, from 1985-89. One of the school's top all-around players, Chuey is ranked fifth on the all-time scoring list (1,984), seventh in assists (390), and 13th in rebounding (558). He holds school records for career free throw percentage (.858, 42-82 in 1985-86), career three-point percentage (.512), single season free throw percentage (.881, 118-134 in 1987-88), and consecutive free throws (30, 1988-89). Bob Parasiliti, sports writer for the Hagerstown Herald-Mail said, "Chuey was a 'complete player.' One that was selfless instead of selfish, because the truly great players realize that if they are patient the game will come ot them. And when it does, that's the time to take over."
