Workman-Hummer made an immediate impact on the highly-successful swimming program when she won NAIA individual titles in the 200-meter backstroke in 1981 and the 100-meter backstroke in 1982. Her winning time in the 100-meter backstroke in 1982 broke the previous national record. In addition to claiming the 200-meter backstroke title as a junior, Workman-Hummer placed second in the 100, 200, and 400-meter freestyl and was a member of the first place 400 and 800-meter frestyle relay teams. The Rams posted a 22-1 record in Workman-Hummer's two seasons at Shepherd and placed second at the NAIA National Championships in 1981 and third in 1982.
